Moving can be a test of the human spirit especially if you have no choice. I know this because we moved a lot while I was a child. You learn to detach yourself from people and places because you do not know how long it would be before you were on the move again.
I have done some moving as an adult because it took us a few decades before becoming homeowners, much to the consternation of our cats and dogs. One cat ran away on moving day and even though we had gone back several times, we have not been able to get her back. Now we have one cat, Fluffy, and two dogs.
We moved to hill country where it is not uncommon to have constant blustery winds and the weather changes from sunny to overcast, not a lot of raining here, in seconds.
The constant wind has screwed up the senses of the dogs and has made a scaredy-cat even scared-ier. Fluffy has been quite hesitant to venture outside especially when the wind sounds like the banshees from hell.
Before, Fluffy would do her business outside after we had chained the scarier of the two dogs who I believe would kill her if she got the opportunity, and Fluffy knew that and knew the safe period when she could go outside.
Now that we have moved, use of the kitty litter box is a constant and what a sh** to get used to, pun intended. It has taken a while for me to get accustomed to cleaning the box and how often to clean it or it changes the atmosphere … you get my drift! The husband is at the point where he wants to throw out the litter box and the kitty! And I have to say, had I not been the sole caretaker of Fluffy and not got so attached to her I just might have those same sentiments, hence, I have only been throwing out the stinky litter and airing the box before putting in new sand … and baking soda does not work!!!
Things have been getting better once I realized the box has to be cleaned by the second day and my constitution has strengthened to deal with it on a more regular basis than it was previously.
The moral of the story is – clean your kitty litter just as often as you clean your bathroom and your kitchen even if the facilities are outside.
